Hallo!
The article, “How German is American”, speaks directly to some of my ancestral history. In the mid nineteenth century roughly five Baumhardt’s came over to the United States from Germany. As they went through Ellis Island the “d” at the end of our surname was dropped, which lead to the strain of Baumhart’s that my family directly descends from.
Many assertions made in the article coincides with migratory trends illustrated in what knowledge I have about my family history. The majority of the immigrants settled in Northern Ohio. As time progressed some of them moved to the greater Chicago area, which can be supported by the maps enclosed in the article.
The article also brought about some new information about the importance of the German community in shaping the greater US community. I found it to be very interesting that the German’s brought about the idea of “Santa Claus”, and the political figures that now represent the two dominating parties in our system.
Although the emphasis on upholding Germanic culture began to take less and less of an emphasis in my family, it is still reassuring to know that I can identify myself as an individual of German-descent.
