In light of the holiday season, I decided to research the true beginnings of christmas, or Weihnachten, from Germany and how America has adapted many of their traditions. I learned that Christbaumgeback is a traditional christmas tree pastry, and they also invented the tradition of gingerbread houses. St. Nicholas day is December 6th, and traditionally children put their boots or shoes on the porch to be filled in the night with either candy, if they have been good, or twigs if naughty. Christmas begins the first sunday of Advent or Adventszeit. Christkind, where Kris Kringle is derived, is a child angel that delivers christmas messages. Weihnachtsmann is another recognized figure who resembles Americas known santa clause. The 25 days of christmas calendar also is from a tradition in germany. Its interesting to reflect on my childhood and realize that this warm, magical time of year has been taken from a completely different land. Its the most wonderful time, of the year!
