AMD 5

For this AMD, I decided to do some personal research about German Americans and their influence throughout American history. I learned many interesting facts, for instance a philadelphia German- language newspaper was the first to report the Declaration of Independence. Famous writers include Theodore Dreiser, John Steinbeck, Thomas Mann, Kurt Vonnegut, and of course, Theodor Seuss Geisel (otherwise known as Dr. Seuss). In journalism, Thomas Nast, the German-born cartoonist who created the images of Uncle Sam and Santa Claus, not to mention the donkey and elephant symbols for politics. Charles Schulz, also, is famous for his creation of the cartoon "Peanuts" in newspapers. It is incredibly interesting to see both the small and major influences of Germans who have come to America for a new life, and in doing so create motifs of our country. Yay for German Americans!
