History of Germans

For this AMD I wasn't sure on what to write about. Then a stroke of inspiration came to me. In my History class we are discussing the origins of the German people and their role in Western Europe. When most people think of the Germans they think of Barbarians invading the Roman Empire. However that was not the case. Most of the German tribes were migrating peacefully, trying to get away from the Huns who were perusing them. So the whole idea of invaders is not the entire truth. Some of the tribes did invade and cause some damage. Such as the Visigoths who sacked Rome and then took over the Italian peninsula. Before this the Romans would hire out the Germans to act as guards and soldiers for them. They would pay them in land and money to patrol the boarders and keep the Huns at bay. This system could not work forever and when Rome fell the German tribes just sorta of took over. We owe quite a lot to the Germans in retrospect. After Rome fell many of the German monks copied classical work from Greece and Rome. With the Germans these works would be lost forever. It is safe to say that if your family came from Europe then you have a little German blood in you.
